Art and Illustration
One of the highlights of our year is the Marsh Mill Art Competition, held at Marsh Mill in Thornton. The competition is open to all amateur artists in the Fylde Wyre and Blackpool districts. The competition is supported by Melrose Investments who own the site and provide the first prize as a gesture of community goodwill. Also in support is the management of Twelve Restaurant who provide a further monetary prize and also refreshments for our prize giving ceremony held in the square at one of our musical events in August. Art prizes are also provided by Grantham’s art supplies.
The prize giving event is a musical occasion and we usually invite the Mayor of Wyre to present the winning artists with their prizes. It is also an event that is supported by other local businesses in the craft village making this project a truly interactive event.
After judging the art works, in July the competition becomes an exhibition open to the public until the end of August. Most artists offer their work for sale and last year 8 paintings were sold to the public. This is a testimony to the high standard of art entered and proves our point that local people have artistic talent, that can rival more experienced palettes! No need to take our word for this however as a sample of the paintings is provided from the winners of the competition displayed in our art calendar for 2010.
The winner this year was a lovely vibrant abstract painting by Sharon Powell a member of the Windmill Art Group in Cleveleys. 2nd prize was Maria Bertoloni an independent artist from Blackpool and third prize Paul Harding an independent artist from Poulton.
So if you are a budding artist and want to enter: then visit the web site in April/May 2010 when the rules and entry form will be displayed. This project is a community event aimed at promoting local artists and we are eager to receive entries from beginners as well.
2008 Art Competition
Here is a selection from the 2008 art exhibition. All these paintings were used in the Fylde C.A.P. calendar. The winning entries from the 2009 competition will appear here before the end of January 2009.
Illustration and Writing
Fylde C.A.P have been involved with the Cleveleys Sea Front Partnership since it was first formed in 2007 to promote community interest in Cleveleys Promenade.
One of the main aims is to bring art into the mix of the many community events that will be organised with individuals and community groups in the future.
To assist in this aim Marjorie Nye has donated three fantasy children’s stories as art/illustration competitions. The first books Dreamworld and Witchworld have been published and can be obtained through this site.
The last book in the trilogy is now launched as the last competition in the trilogy.
This year a twist comes in the tale with a treasure hunt to be incorporated into the finished book. Also for the first time we are opening the competition to children aged from 11 upwards. We also want to create an intergenerational competition so entries from adults and former winning illustrators are welcome.
So this year we hope for more interesting illustrations to be entered.
Fylde C.A.P is keen to develop other art events for the community, if you are interested please contact us through our contact page.
The book is composed in rhyme, so promotes creativity in the verse as well as promoting art through illustration.
The Spirit World story, competition details and entry form can be downloaded here
Copies of the books can be obtained by contacting us through the contacts page.
Also Grist to the Mill is available. See contact page.
Fylde C.A.P are keen to help other voluntary groups create interest through poetry, just ask!
